What is freethought?
There’s no need to completely reinvent the wheel, so let’s start with the definition on wikipedia’s page on freethought:
Freethought is a philosophical viewpoint that holds that opinions should be formed on the basis of science, logic, and reason, and should not be influenced by authority, tradition, or any other dogma. The cognitive application of freethought is known as freethinking, and practitioners of freethought are known as freethinkers. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freethought)
That sums it up nicely. Basically, freethought holds that there are superior methods for arriving at your conclusions: science, logic and reason. Freethought is not a set of conclusions or beliefs. It is a belief in a method of inquiry and discovery.
Now, a brief word about god and freethought.
While most freethinkers have historically been atheists, agnostics and skeptics (and this blog will most often reflect those conclusions), it does not support those ideas on the basis of blind dogma. It is at the core of Freethought that one should have as one’s opinion the conclusion for which there is more evidence. If there were insurmountable evidence for a god, then freethinkers would be obliged to side with that opinion. Based on science, logic, and reason, most freethinkers have concluded that the current evidence does not point to the existence of a god. However, good arguments are always to be respected – if we’re all playing the same game. Appeals to emotion or to consequences or to authority should always be rejected.
A point to be clear about is that dogmatic, unreasoned belief in religion is not the only enemy of freethought. All opinions which abandon the search for truth through science, logic, and reason are held to scrutiny. It is our belief that this is the most respectful attitude we can hold toward truth. It leads us on the best path to knowledge. And it will lead us on the best path toward happiness for mankind.
It bears mentioning, “Freethought” should be redefined as:
“A philosophical viewpoint that holds that opinions should be formed on the basis of science, logic, and reason, and should not be influenced by any other than the aforementioned authorities, traditions, or dogmas.”
